Roger L. Gordon

Roger L. Gordon's groundbreaking verdicts in toxic substances, defective products, construction accidents, premises liability, and medical malpractice have garnered him the respect of the legal community. Law & Politics magazine has named him a Los Angeles "Super Lawyer" consecutively, and he has been included for more than 10 consecutive years in The Best Layers in America®. He is also a member of the prestigious American Board of Trial Advocates.

Mr. Gordon relied upon his handpicked team of associates, legal professionals and expert witnesses to develop winning and insightful strategies in the courtroom. In defective products, his cases ran the spectrum from toxic chemical exposure to improperly designed safety devices. In Miller v. Amro Fabricating, the plaintiff fell from scaffolding to the concrete floor six feet beneath him. Mr. Gordon demonstrated that the plaintiff's fall was the result of a scaffolding design that did not provide adequate warning -- its guard rail was not properly latched in place. The plaintiff received a verdict of nearly $4 million.

Mr. Gordon also successfully prosecuted pharmaceutical companies for failing to properly warn about known side effects. In one case, a plaintiff developed a blood disease from a medication she had taken. In a similar case, a plaintiff suffered severe, sexually limiting side effects from a medication he had taken. Without a doubt, it was Mr. Gordon's ability to express complex legal or technical concepts in terms that a juror could understand that yielded him consistently staggering verdicts and the label of consumer safety advocate.

In the field of medical malpractice, Mr. Gordon focused on future medical requirements in addition to the liability associated with the base cause of action. Because of this "whole need" approach, the verdicts he realized for his plaintiffs often soared into the millions. In Romero v. Queen of the Valley, the plaintiff was rendered quadriplegic and developmentally delayed due to an obstetrician's failure to recognize the mother's need for emergency surgery. The jury awarded the plaintiff $24 million. Mr. Gordon often tackled cases that other lawyers would deem too complex to distill into a reasonable theory for the jury.

Perhaps most prominent of all Mr. Gordon's cases were those involving toxic substances. These are cases that specifically revolve around environmental exposure to toxic pollutant or chemicals that have harsh consequences on longevity, health and prenatal development. Further, toxic torts often represent the cutting edge of legal advocacy. These cases often serve as the first official delineation, linking exposure to an environmental constituent to the development of tangible negative effect on the plaintiff. In one such toxic tort, the case of Marcos Franco v. O'Hommel Co., the plaintiff sustained in-utero exposure to lead. Mr. Gordon recovered nearly $4 million at trial to compensate Mr. Franco for his injuries. In another case against a chemical company, the plaintiff was exposed to hexane solvent from which he developed peripheral neuropathy. The case settled outside of court for nearly $2 million.

Mr. Gordon is a member of the Los Angeles County Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Consumer Attorneys of California and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. Mr. Gordon has served as an arbitrator in medical malpractice cases. He was awarded his juris doctor from Loyola University in 1972.
