Keeping Up With Recalls
You may not always think about it, but when you're riding a bicycle, there are a lot of parts that have to work in unison and work correctly in order to help propel you forward and keep you upright. A lot can go wrong if even just one part is defective or doesn't get the job done the way it was intended. So, it is a wise bicyclist who becomes a consumer watchdog—keeping current on product recalls.
A great resource for this is the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). This independent agency of the United States government was established in 1972 to protect "against unreasonable risks of injuries associated with consumer products."
The commission has an easily-navigable, well-organized website (www.cpsc.gov) that includes details regarding recent recalls, case settlements, press releases and much more. You can even conduct your own research by date or product type, and sign up to receive e-mail announcements regarding recalls.
The following are examples of recall information that's available through the CPSC as well as on independent sites.
