Widely Used Cholesterol Drug Zetia May Not Be Effective

Drug Companies Sat on Data

Los Angeles - Two pharmaceutical companies delayed releasing the results of clinical trials showing that a widely used cholesterol drug, Zetia, and a pill that contains it, Vytorin, failed to slow accumulation of fatty plaque in the arteries. Millions of patients continued to take the medications, which may even contribute to plaque formation in the arteries, while cardiologists were waiting for manufacturers Merck and Schering Plough to publish trial results. The pharmaceutical companies claimed the complexity of the trials delayed presenting the results, but quickly produced them when pressured by news stories and the U.S. Congress.

"Consumers cannot rely on the Federal Drug Administration or any government agency to protect them against these large drug companies," said attorney Howard Krepack. "Personal Injury attorneys fill the void as consumer protectors by bringing lawsuits that result in giant pharmaceutical companies learning they must put safety before profits, or face being hit with large verdicts for injury and damage their products cause."
