FDA Recalls Alfalfa Sprouts Linked to Salmonella
The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced a nationwide recall of raw alfalfa sprouts that have been linked with Salmonella infections in 10 states, including California.
The recall affects raw alfalfa sprouts distributed under the brand names Caldwell Fresh Foods, Nature’s Choice and California Exotics alfalfa sprouts. According to the FDA, the sprouts were distributed to a variety of restaurants, delicatessens and retailers nationwide, including Trader Joe’s and Walmart stores.
So far 22 cases of Salmonella Newport infections have been confirmed, 11 of which were in California. Six of the cases have been hospitalized; no deaths have been reported.
Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems. According to the FDA, healthy people infected with Salmonella may experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek medical care. “We have always been strong proponents of the power of knowledge and information to keep people out of harm’s way,” says Personal Injury Attorney Howard Krepack, a partner in the law firm of Gordon, Edelstein, Krepack, Grant & Felton.
“Keeping ourselves safe from harmful products is not always easy as government recalls designed to alert the public are not always made in a timely or effective manner. However, the FDA is making strides to rectify this problem, and has recently launched a Safety Reporting Portal designed to enable everyone from researchers and manufacturers to health professionals and concerned citizens to report product and safety issues to the FDA. This is a great step toward enhancing everyone’s health and welfare.”
