Symptoms of traumatic brain injury (TBI) depend on the type and severity and the part of the brain that is affected. The brain is responsible for controlling movements, behaviors, thoughts and sensations. When a TBI occurs, there can be a wide range of physical and psychological signs. Not every bump and bruise to the head is something to worry about, but one should be educated about the signs and symptoms that are associated with TBI and seek medical advice, if necessary.

Signs of Mild TBI:

  • A brief period of unconsciousness
  • Amnesia for events immediately before and after the injury
  • Headache
  • Confusion
  • Dizziness or loss of balance
  • Sensory problems, such as blurred vision, ringing in the ears or a bad taste in the mouth
  • Mood changes
  • Memory or concentration problems

Signs of Moderate to Severe TBI:

  • Persistent headache
  • Repeated vomiting or nausea
  • Convulsions or seizures
  • Inability to awaken from sleep
  • Dilation of one or both pupils of the eyes
  • Slurred speech
  • Weakness or numbness in the extremities
  • Loss of coordination
  • Profound confusion
  • Agitation, combativeness
