Honors for AFT's Velma Butler, Assy. Speaker-Elect Karen Bass

Law firm attorneys, staff and friends recently joined the A. Philip Randolph Institute in honoring Velma Butler, Karen Bass and other leading advocates for civil rights and economic justice.

As president of AFT Local 1521A, Butler leads 1,200 classified employees of the L.A. Community College District. In the other photo, Dombchik, Scardino and Greenwood congratulate Karen Bass, who was chosen the previous day to succeed Fabian Nuñez as Speaker of the Assembly.

A. Philip Randolph was a pioneering Black union leader who successfully organized railroad porters on Pullman sleeping cars and worked closely with the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. The AFL-CIO chartered the institute bearing his name to encourage links between the labor and community movements. The Feb. 29 celebration was held in Exposition Park's African American Museum.
