Gordon, Edelstein, Krepack, Grant, Felton & Goldstein, LLP Implement Eco-Friendly Programs
Gordon, Edelstein, Krepack, Grant, Felton & Goldstein, LLP, a recognized leader in protecting the rights of injured victims, has joined in the fight to protect our environment. In an effort to fight global warming, address soaring energy demands and threats to our natural resources, GEK has adopted and implemented eco-friendly programs and practices that will reduce its carbon footprint.
We all know that emissions from road vehicles are the largest contributors to smog, that traffic congestion often results in stress and irritability, and that the daily maintenance and use of a vehicle can be quite costly. Public transportation, on the other hand, benefits the environment and enhances the quality of life. It produces significantly less carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide per passenger mile than does private vehicles and each year saves nearly 4 million gallons of gasoline in the U.S. per day. GEK's commitment to contributing to a better, more healthful environment thus starts with transportation. GEK has joined the Metro Business Tap Program and provides annual Metro cards to its employees at no cost. Choosing to be a part of the solution, GEK employees have embraced the program, boasting more than 50% enrollment to date.
GEK has also adopted the Reduce/Reuse/Recycle concept to minimize its environmental impact. As an example, each of the firm's CRT computer monitor's has been replaced with the more energy efficient LCD monitors. Based on information found in the EPA's Energy Star program, in so doing, we have reduced the energy consumption of the monitors by one-half to two-thirds. The firm has also significantly reduced its paper consumption by moving to a paperless system. The vast majority of documents are now read, stored and sent electronically. Documents that must be printed are printed on recycled paper. Ink and toner cartridges are returned for reuse.
Preserving our world's natural resources is a responsibility we all share, and GEK encourages you to join us in this cause. Here are some simple ways you can become more environmentally friendly:
- Save energy by reducing the electricity you use and replacing your light bulbs with compact fluorescent lighting (CFL). Energystar.gov reports CFLs use up to 75% less energy than traditional bulbs and last up to 10 times longer. The U.S. EPA estimates that if every American household were to change one bulb to CFL, we would save enough energy to light more than 2.5 million homes for a year and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of nearly 800,000 cars.
- Conserve Water. According to EPA, a typical family of 4 uses 400 gallons of water a day. Cut down on usage by turning off the water off while you brush your teeth, washing only full loads of laundry and dishes, and watering the lawn or garden during the coolest part of the day.
- Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Adopt the principles of the three "R"s in your own life. When shopping, bring your own reusable bags and purchase products with less packaging. Donate to people you know or to charity instead of throwing items away. Recycle paper, plastic, glass bottles, cardboard, and aluminum cans.
