Diabetes Drug Warning: Second Important Study Concludes Prescribed Diabetes Drug Can Significantly Increase Risk of Death
Another new study, this time by the prestigious Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), found that those treated with the Type 2 diabetes drug Avandia had significantly elevated risks of heart attack and death. This follows another recent study by the The New England Journal of Medicine which found that a greater risk of heart attack and death due to heart disease are among the possible side effects of taking the drug. Avandia is manufactured by pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline, and has been prescribed to 1 million patients to help control their blood sugar.

The JAMA study concluded that compared with patients taking other oral diabetes medicines, patients taking Avandia had:
  • A 60% increased risk of heart failure.
  • A 40% increased risk of heart attack.
  • A 30% increased risk of death.
Other side effects linked to Avandia include low blood pressure, liver toxicity and congestive heart failure.

Diabetes groups are concerned about the side effects of Avandia, but recommend contacting your doctor before stopping use of the drug.

Our firm has extensive experience delivering justice to those injured by pharmaceuticals' side effects. We are currently representing individuals who believe they have been harmed by Avandia.
