Diabetes Drug Warning: Avandia May Significantly Increase the Risk of Death

A recent study has shown that a widely prescribed pill to treat Type 2 diabetes could actually increase the risks of heart attack and death due to heart disease. Doctors have prescribed Avandia to about 1 million patients in the U.S. to help control their blood sugar. The study, published May 21 in The New England Journal of Medicine, shows that patients taking Avandia:

  • Face a greater risk of heart-related death than those treated with other diabetes drugs.
  • Face a 43% increased risk of heart attack.
Other side effects that Avandia, produced by pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline, has been linked to include:
  • Low blood pressure
  • Liver toxicity
  • Congestive heart failure
Diabetes groups are concerned about the side effects of Avandia, but recommend you contact your doctor before stopping use of the drug.

If you believe that taking Avandia may have harmed you or a loved one, please contact the law firm at (213) 739-7000 to ask questions and learn more about your legal options.
