Attorney Gary Stern Discusses Vital Issues with Assembly Speaker John Pérez
Gary Stern, an attorney with the law firm of Gordon, Edelstein, Krepack, Grant, Felton & Goldstein, LLP, met recently with California State Assembly Speaker John Pérez. He was accompanied by five other attorneys from the Government Affairs Committee of the Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles.
They discussed, among other things, the state budget and how it should not be balanced on the backs of the middle class and not at the expense of the Courts.
“Being a member of that committee for the past three years has enabled me to have an impact on legislation that can affect our clients and the way we practice law,” says Stern.
“This particular meeting provided us with an update about important topics being debated in the Legislature. It was also a reminder that Speaker Pérez is a staunch supporter of the things we as a firm believe in, more specifically:
- The right to a fair civil justice system free from unreasonable restrictions on damages;
- The right to access to the courts;
- The right to a jury trial, and
- The right of workers to a decent wage, fair labor standards and a middle-class standard of living.”
The group also discussed the tension that currently exists regarding power in the state judicial system, and how the centralized system has had great benefits for both attorneys and the public. The view of consumer attorneys is that a centralized, unified, statewide court system is better than having 58 different sets of rules, one for each of the 58 counties. One set of rules promotes predictability and fairness in the courts throughout California.
“In more than 30 years of practicing law, I have learned that it benefits our clients when I get involved in social and political issues and raise my voice in support of the issues that matter to them. That is the type of lawyer I would want to retain if the need arose.”
